Updated: 22nd August 2025
Last month (July 30th), the U.S. Government issued a presidential memorandum titled "Termination of De Minimis Treatment for All Countries."
This order states that, effective August 29th 2025, the de minimis exemption (which allows low-value items to be imported duty-free) will be suspended for mail items containing goods imported for consumption (include order from us). This means these items will now be subject to import duties.
However, as of today, the specific procedures for these taxable items—such as how to declare them to U.S. Customs and how duties are to be paid—remain unclear.
As a result, we must inform you that mail shipments addressed to the U.S. may experience significant delays in delivery or could potentially be returned to sender.
We ask for your understanding regarding this situation when placing your order.
We will monitor the situation closely and will promptly provide any additional information or updates on our website as it becomes available.
Thank you for your understanding.

If you're a U.S. customer shopping at BanzaiHobby for RC products, Japanese model kits or train models, you may be wondering the recent changes to U.S. import policies may affect your orders.
As of May 2, 2025, the Trump administration has implemented new tariffs on goods from China—but how does this impact shipments from Japan?
Here’s what you need to know.
Do You Have to Pay Import Taxes on Japanese Goods?
The good news: Most hobby goods from Japan (Made in Japan: plastic models, rc parts, train models) are NOT affected by the new China tariffs. (as of 7th May 2025.) However, standard U.S. customs rules still apply:
-
Orders under $800 → No import taxes (thanks to the de minimis rule)
-
Orders over $800 → Possible customs duties (varies by product type)
Key Changes (May 2025 Update):
-
New tariffs mostly target Chinese-made goods. Most of our products we sell are Made in Japan.
-
Japanese hobby items (RC Products, Plastic Model, Train Model, etc.) remain duty-free or low-tax as before - as long as they are made in Japan.)
- Please note, if the products you are purchasing is made in China, your order will be affected by this change (Eg., most figures are made in China).
How Much Are Import Duties from Japan?
Most Japanese hobby goods fall under these categories:
This rate apply if you are buying more than US$800 total.
Item Type | Duty Rate | Notes |
---|---|---|
Plastic model kits | 0% | (Gundam, Scale Model, etc.) |
Action figures | 4-6% | (Nendoroids, Scale Figures) |
RC cars & parts | 2-4% | (Overdose, Yokomo, ReveD etc) |
Electronics* | Varies | If made in China, new tariffs may apply |
Reciprocal tariff change is delayed until 9th July 2025 (as of 7th May)
Who Charges the Fees?
-
U.S. Customs (CBP) determines duties.
-
USPS usually has no extra fees for orders under $800.
-
We use Japan Post for the shipment which is handled by USPS when the shipment arrive in USA. (Private couriers DHL, FedEx, UPS etc may add a 50 brokerage fee but we currently do not use them)
-
How to Avoid Surprise Fees
✅ Keep orders under $800 inc shipping (de minimis rule = no tax).
✅ Split large orders (stay under $800 per package).
✅ Check product origins (avoid Chinese-made products if you are concerned).
✅ We use USPS/Japan Post (lower brokerage fees than private couriers).

Important Disclaimer: Tariff Regulations Are Changing Frequently
Under the current Trump administration (2025), U.S. import policies—including tariffs and de minimis rules—are undergoing adjustments. This blog reflects known policies as of 7th May 2025, but regulations may change at any time.
Ultimate responsibility for import fees lies with the buyer (as an importer).
We recommend:
-
Checking U.S. CBP updates before ordering.
-
Confirming duty rates for your specific items via the USITC Tariff Database.
BanzaiHobby cannot predict or control customs decisions, as taxes are determined by U.S. authorities upon arrival.
