In 1970, the Celica was born as Japan’s first specialty car. With its sports car-like stylish appearance yet practical enough even for beginners to handle, the Celica instantly captivated young people. In addition to its stylish design, thanks to the groundbreaking production and sales system called the "Full Choice System," which allowed customers to select their own interior, engine, and exterior, the Celica further solidified its image as a "personal car."

Then, in April 1973, the LB (Liftback) model with a hatchback tail was introduced. In addition to the 1.6L engine, a 2.0L engine was added, giving the impression of a compact car with displacement rivaling the Crown and Cedric-class sedans. Furthermore, two types of DOHC engines were also made available, with the Celica LB1600GT and 2000GT joining the lineup. This reflected Toyota’s intention to position the Celica LB as its premier sports car.

The style of the Celica LB, while sharing the same coupe wheelbase, achieved a more stable appearance. The front and doors were extended, increasing the overall length by 50mm, widening the overall width by 20mm, and lowering the overall height by 20mm. It also adopted a fastback style featuring a liftback door, which is the origin of the "LB" designation.

While the coupe seated five, the Celica LB was designed as a four-seater, with a design reminiscent of the popular American model, the Ford Mustang Fastback. Despite being larger, heavier, and seating only four, this Celica LB played a significant role in the overall popularity of the Celica line.

It is no exaggeration to say that the emergence of this Celica LB led to the recognition of the specialty car genre.
