- Series 103 is a general-purpose commuter type train modeled on the first generation of JNR's new performance commuter car model 101, with more emphasis on economy, which was built around 3,400 from 1963 .
- It has been active for long as a flower form of commuter transport mainly in the Tokyo metropolitan area and the Osaka Kinki area. Along with the division of the JNR, JR Hokkaido and JR Shikoku are excluded from JR companies, and each has been active for half a century, but it is finally coming to an end.
