KiHa 81 debuted in 1960 (Showa 35) as the first batch of the first diesel railcar limited express KiHa 80 series, aboard the limited express "Hatsukari." Its distinctive bonnet shape is distinctive, and it later served as the lead for various express trains.
The KiHa 82 900 series was introduced by converting the first batch of KiRo 80 cars into front-end cars from 1968 (Showa 43) onward. Its window arrangement was characteristic of the Green Car era, and after its success on the "Inaho," "Tsubasa," and "Hitachi," it moved to Hokkaido and was also active on the "Okhotsk" and "Hokuto" trains.
